There are 12 Nine Tails Puzzle Boxes in total, and you can find them throughout Teshio Ridge, a mid-game area located north of Tokachi Range and Nayoro Wilds. Once you reach the icy zone, you’ll also encounter the kitsune ghost of yotei, one of the Yotei Six members.
You’ll first learn about the Kitsune Ghost of Yotei puzzle boxes during the main story quest, The Way of the Shamisen. The “Nine Tails” refers to the shinobi group led by Kitsune. The boxes themselves can be collected anytime, even after completing the main quests.
Tip: You can open and solve the boxes through your inventory once you’ve collected them.
Where the Kitsune Ghost of Yotei Puzzle Boxes Come From?
The kitsune Ghost of Yotei puzzle boxes are found in a few different ways:
- Kitsune Altars – Found in open areas during exploration. The Puzzle Box sits right in front of the altar.
- Yotei Camps – Enemy bases controlled by the Yotei Six sometimes hold a box near their Altar of Reflection.
- Nine Tails Hideouts – Hidden camps that include small puzzles involving fox statues and lanterns. Solve them, clear the enemies, and you’ll get the Puzzle Box.

- Old Graveyard Ridge – On a ridge west of the Old Graveyard (Kitsune Altar).
- Sakuru Woods – Found under a rock formation with golden leaves. You’ll get it from a fallen Nine Tails shinobi.
- Crossroads Trading Post – Earned after clearing the Yotei Six Camp.
- Snow Drift Springs Hideout – Light lanterns based on the poses of nearby fox statues. The correct one shows a fox lying flat.
- Teshio Coast – On a cliffside near a Kitsune Altar.
- Hidden Lair – Light only the lanterns on the far sides, then rotate fox statues based on symbol directions: left, forward, right, back.
- Sarobetsu Forest – Near Ran the Bowyer’s side quest area; beware of the snowstorm and bounty target, Snowstorm Katagiri.
- Nakajima Ice Cave – Northwest of the frozen lake. Near the Reliquary of Compassion.
- Deserted Village – Clear out all enemies in this Yotei Six Camp.
- Shipwreck Shoal – Found at the base of a ridge.
- Soya Port – Near the previous location. Free the weaponsmith for rewards and the Puzzle Box.
- Secret Hideout (Final One) – Light only the lanterns marked with the “Engage” symbol. Avoid the “Death” symbols or you’ll take damage.

Each box follows a fixed sequence — from Interesting Box to Epic Box. Here’s how to open every single one:
- Interesting Box – Slide the black bar left, then the wooden panel down.
Reward: Charm of the Wary Opponent (press L2 to focus on detecting enemies). - Peculiar Box – Slide both black bars down to open.
Reward: 750 mon. - Fascinating Box – Alternate sliding the black bar and wooden panel.
