In true JRPG fashion, Square Enix has left us with more questions than answers, but one thing’s certain: the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD Remake is real, and it’s coming. Announced during the Dragon Quest Day livestream, the remake will follow the upcoming Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, rounding out the legendary Erdrick Trilogy.
For long-time fans, this is like finding a slime in the grass and realizing it’s a Metal King in disguise. After months of silence and speculation, Square Enix confirmed that the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD Remake will arrive in 2025, though a specific Dragon Quest remake release date is still MIA, likely somewhere in a locked treasure chest behind a miniboss.
The remake follows the same gorgeous HD-2D style used in Octopath Traveler and the upcoming DQ3 Remake, blending retro charm with modern polish. It’s a faithful yet visually rich take on the classics that first defined the series on the Famicom. And while the devs didn’t spill too much about gameplay changes or added features, fans are already speculating about tweaks to make these early titles more accessible to modern audiences. Fewer random encounters, maybe? Or a more generous gold drop from those stingy Drackies?
This isn’t the first Dragon Quest remake we’ve seen from Square Enix, but it might be the most anticipated in years. With the HD-2D engine giving new life to these formative RPGs, the studio is clearly betting on nostalgia with a side of refinement. Whether you’re a team Turnip-Headed Hero or just in it for the orchestral soundtrack, this remake is looking to bridge generations of players.
As far as platforms go, Square hasn’t confirmed the full lineup yet, but considering Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is coming to Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, there’s a good chance this new Dragon Quest remake will follow suit.
