Square Enix and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) have officially announced a new collaboration to create an original intellectual property game. The Final Fantasy developer and TBS are coming together to try and make something original in the gaming space using Square Enix’s experience and status in the industry.
Square Enix, famous for titles like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, is expanding its vision by working with TBS, which has been focusing on digital growth through its EDGE (Expand Digital Global Experience) strategy. TBS even launched a division called TBS Games in 2023 to try its hand at video game development. This new game will be developed for both domestic (Japanese) and overseas audiences, which will be new for TBS.
What makes this announcement even more exciting is that Square Enix will no longer limit itself to PlayStation platforms like the PS5 and PS4. For a long time, fans have been used to seeing new Square Enix games mostly on Sony consoles, but this project will be released on other platforms too, such as Xbox and possibly Nintendo, and PC. This shift shows how seriously Square Enix is taking its future projects after the tumult faced with previous AAA releases.
Fans of the Final Fantasy franchise also have something to look forward to. Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, recently confirmed that work on Part 3 of the trilogy is well underway. He also teased that the team is considering adding new gameplay mechanics, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. We still don’t have any details, nor do we have a release window, but the team’s plans for the final entry in the trilogy is looking to be a significant improvement over the last one.
The combination of Square Enix and TBS teaming up could result in something special. With this collaboration, they are aiming to create something that speaks to players everywhere, not just in Japan.
