Developers Game Science’s epic RPG is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. As the Destined One, you’ll come across various bosses. The Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong is an early, optional miniboss that can be quite challenging, especially when first encountering him. Similar to Elden Ring bosses, figuring out how to defeat the Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong takes strategy.
In this guide, you will learn everything you need to know about finding and defeating the Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong.
Where to Find the Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong
The Wandering Wight is located just after the “Outside the Forest” Shrine in the Forest of Wolves, in the first chapter of Black Myth: Wukong. To find him, take the path to the right from the shrine, defeat the wolves, cross the bridge, and look for an open area. You’ll spot the Wandering Wight, a big blue figure, roaming around in the clearing near a cave that leads to the next part of the chapter.
When to Fight the Wandering Wight
The Wandering Wight is tough to beat, especially early in the game when your stats, skills, and spells are limited. If you try to fight him before unlocking your first Transformation spell, you’re in for a difficult battle. Instead, consider going left from the “Outside the Forest” Shrine, cross the upper bridge, and fight Guangzhi, the game’s first real boss. Beating Guangzhi unlocks the Red Tides Transformation, which gives you a second health bar during transformation and makes the fight against the Wandering Wight much easier.
The Wandering Wight moves around in the clearing, so if you’re not ready for the fight, you can avoid him and return later. Once you’re ready, though, it’s worth fighting him to earn his powerful Spirit summon, a feature you’ll unlock later in chapter 1.
How to Defeat the Wandering Wight in Black Myth: Wukong
The Wandering Wight has several powerful moves, so it’s crucial to learn his attack patterns:
- Swipe and Shuffle Combo: The Wight lowers itself and shuffles toward you with its hands. This move has a wide range, so try to dodge behind him or disengage when you see it coming.
- Palm Earthquake Attack: The Wight slams its palm into the ground, creating an eruption. Sometimes, this is followed by a series of larger earthquakes radiating from the impact point. When you see the Wight’s hand go down, either run away or try to dodge through the shockwaves.
- Stomp Combo: The Wight lifts its foot high before stomping down. This attack has a large area of effect, so back away when you see it coming. Be cautious, as he might follow up with more stomps or even a head slam.
- Jumping Stomp: The Wight jumps into the air and tries to crush you. Although it’s fast, you can anticipate it when his feet leave the ground and dodge accordingly.
- Hand Blast: The Wight pulls back its hand and shoots a massive line of energy at you. This move is quick and deals a lot of damage, so either dodge to the side or roll through it at the right moment.
- Running Clap: The Wight lowers its hands to the side and charges at you, clapping as he goes. Either run away or dodge when he gets close. He might also wiggle his arms wildly before slamming the ground, so be ready for a similar reaction.
- Headbutt: The Wight slams his head into the ground, dealing a quick and heavy blow. Watch for him to pull his head back slightly, and dodge immediately when you see it.
The key to winning this fight is avoiding getting hit, as the Wandering Wight’s attacks can deal massive damage, often requiring two chugs from your Gourd to recover. Unless you’re confident in your dodging skills, it’s safer to back away from attacks than to try dodging through them.
Strategy to Outsmart the Wandering Wight
- Red Tides Transformation: Use this early in the fight to gain an extra health bar and build up your meter. Use heavy attacks to light the Wandering Wight on fire, which will deal damage over time.
- Immobilize: This ability is useful for dealing damage while staying safe. If you can, stagger the boss by using a heavy attack with a Focus to break the stun.
Stunning the Wandering Wight or knocking him off balance is the best way to win this fight. Use focus-powered heavy strikes whenever possible, and try to lure him into charging into one of the stone poles in the area for a brief stun.
The trick is to learn when it’s safe to get a few hits in and when to back off. Find a middle ground where you’re close enough that he doesn’t charge but far enough to escape his other attacks.
Rewards for Defeating the Wandering Wight
When you defeat the Wandering Wight, he’ll drop the Cat’s Eye Beads Curio, some crafting materials, and the Wandering Wight Spirit. Once you unlock the ability to absorb Spirits, you can briefly transform into the Wandering Wight to perform a powerful head slam. This Spirit also gives you a significant defense boost, which will be very helpful in the first three chapters of the game.
