Power Clash Work in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here’s How Power Clash Work in Monster Hunter Wilds

With new mechanics introduced in Capcom’s action RPG, how does Power Clash work in Monster Hunter Wilds? Apart from picking the right weapon, this move can really change the outcome of a battle as it can help you successfully push back monsters like Arveld when you time your block to a certain attack, leaving the it off-balanced and open to a counterstrike.

But how do you actually perform it? Let’s break down how Power Clash works in Monster Hunter Wilds.

To trigger a Power Clash, you need to guard against specific monster attacks. The more you block, the more you build up the Power Clash effect. It’s not clear exactly how many blocks you need, but it seems that blocking attacks is all you need to do. Counterintuitively, using a Perfect Guard—blocking just before an attack hits—doesn’t seem to speed up the process.

Once you’re in a position to perform a Power Clash, you need to mash the Y/Triangle/Left Click button to succeed. The following five shielded weapons can perform this special move:

  • Lance
  • Gunlance
  • Heavy Bowgun
  • Sword and Shield
  • Charge Blade
  • Great Sword

After your first Power Clash, the requirements for the next one increase significantly. For example, if it takes four blocks to trigger the first Power Clash, you might need to block around 20 attacks for the second one.

When you successfully perform a Power Clash, the monster will flinch, giving you a short window to counter-attack. For instance, if you use the Gunlance against Arkveld, you can follow up a Power Clash with a double Y/Triangle attack into a Wyrmstake combo.

For weaker monsters like Catachabra, they might get knocked down immediately, giving you even more time to deal damage or heal.

Not All Attacks Trigger Power Clash

It’s important to note that not every attack in Monster Hunter Wilds can trigger a Power Clash. This mechanic mainly works on specific moves. For example, you can trigger a Power Clash with Catachabra and Doshaguma’s windup slam or Arkveld’s red chain-arm slam. You’ll need to experiment to find out which attacks can lead to a Power Clash when blocked.

On the other hand, some monsters like Rey Dau and Balahara don’t seem to have any attacks that trigger a Power Clash. Keep in mind that this information is based on the open beta, and things could change in the full release.
