Square Enix is currently juggling a number of projects, and it looks like Final Fantasy 17 might be one of them. During a lively on-stage exchange with fellow director Naoki Hamaguchi, Naoki Yoshida (better known as Yoshi-P) dropped some hints about the next installment and Hamaguchi’s possible key role within the same.
Hamaguchi has been working on Final Fantasy games since 2006 and was tasked with directing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
Will Naoki Hamaguchi Direct Final Fantasy 17?
A recent segment with two of Square Enix’s leading directors may have given us a little more insight into what’s next for Final Fantasy 17. A viral clip from the Final Fantasy 16 2026 Fan Festival in Berlin captures both Yoshi-P, director and producer of FF14, and Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the recent remakes, on stage together, sharing laughs and engaging with the audience.
Yoshi-P: I think it’s one of the biggest compliments people were saying in the comments: they wish Hamaguchi is making FF17. But you don’t have to answer…!
Hamaguchi: If I answer…
Yoshi-P: No, no, don’t!
It’s certainly intriguing to hear Final Fantasy 17 mentioned, especially as Yoshi-P talks about the possibility of a new sequel already being in the works. This could be a clear sign that Hamaguchi is set to take on directing both Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Final Fantasy 17 at the same time.
While many fans have appreciated Hamaguchi’s work on the reboot titles, if this news is confirmed, it would mark one of the first times he takes on such a major role for a new Final Fantasy game. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
