The creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, leaves Sony, bidding farewell to the company and its involvement in the development of PHYSINT, the game he was working on with the multinational conglomerate. This split was first made public by Sony through a statement on X:
“An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game.”
“Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”
Of course, two entities walking away from one another in the gaming industry isn’t unheard of. Nevertheless, a well-known figure like Hideo Kojima separating from Sony definitely does not leave a good mark on its reputation. Not to mention, Kojima’s statement regarding the situation further worsens Sony’s standing:
“Earlier, there was an official release from Kojipro, but suddenly, in mid-June this year, a notice arrived from SIE stating that they would ‘cancel the PHYSINT project currently in production.’ For me personally, and for Kojipro as well, PHYSINT is an important project, and in order to continue it at all costs, we have been searching for a ‘new partner’ over these past three months. While seeking advice from people in various fields and advancing negotiations, we have decided to team up again with XBOX as a partner with whom we can share a mutual ‘vision for the future.’ The next-generation ‘espionage action’ game PHYSINT is continuing production, so please don’t worry.”
It makes sense why Kojima bid farewell to Sony, considering that it almost cancelled PHYSINT entirely. Funnily enough, the aforementioned project has now been handed over to PlayStation’s rival, Xbox. To add to that, Kojima is also developing another project with the aforementioned company, OD. Things seem to finally be looking up for Xbox, while they worsen for PlayStation, including the many blunders it has been making as of late. These include cancelling the production of physical discs after 2028, stopping development on Destiny 2, and many more.

Hideo Kojima Leaves Sony, But What Happens To PHYSINT?
This entire situation, as good as it is for Xbox, still leaves a blanket of confusion in the air, specifically concerning the development of PHYSINT. The game was announced in 2024, and its current status and development budget have yet to be made public. Furthermore, now that Kojima isn’t working with Sony, he has lost access to the Decima engine, which is exclusive to Sony. The game is high-concept and aims to blend film and gaming, with Kojima previously relying on Sony Pictures and its subsidiary, Columbia Pictures, for that aspect.
These hindrances make it pretty clear that we won’t be getting PHYSINT anytime soon. Needless to say, someone as popular as Kojima in the gaming world breaking ties with Sony does not leave a good impact on its image.
