Avalanche Studios, best known for the Just Cause series, has revealed that a new open-world game is in development. Rather than a traditional announcement, the news surfaced through a job listing on their careers page, and has raised the question of whether Avalanche is preparing Just Cause 5 or introducing an entirely new open-world adventure.
It’s been a rocky year for Avalanche Studios, with layoffs and the closure of their Liverpool office raising some worrying signs. But now, the Swedish developer seems to be gearing up for something big, and speculation has increased tenfold. Avalanche has a solid track record, not just with Just Cause (pun intended?), but also with RAGE and the criminally underrated Mad Max. Some fans are crossing their fingers for a Mad Max 2 or even RAGE 3, but the majority seem to be hoping for Just Cause 5. Of course, there’s always the chance that we’ll just get a remaster of Just Cause 4, which might not be the news everyone wants.
The Avalanche Studios job page is advertising a Senior Technical Designer role. The job description is as follows:
“As a Senior Technical Designer, you will play a vital role in the development of an unannounced AAA project. You will serve as a tech design generalist supporting the gameplay team, coordinating across disciplines, driving features forward where gaps exist, and ensuring that the gameplay features the team builds can be fully experienced in-game. Your hands-on expertise in game engine editors and scripting will be essential for creating gameplay experiences, building prefabs, and providing tools and setups that help the wider team excel”.

Avalanche’s New Game Seems Unlikely To Be Just Cause 5
The job description offers few clues about which franchise this Senior Technical Designer will be joining. While some hope this could signal the arrival of Just Cause 5, Avalanche’s founder previously stated that a fifth installment was unlikely. Last year, rumors circulated that Just Cause 5 had been canceled mid-development, with founder Christofer Sundberg suggesting the company’s current direction would prevent the series from returning.
