After confirming that Destiny 2 updates shall come to a halt, reports of layoffs at Bungie have surfaced, and there’s still no word on a third game in the series. Bloomberg reports that the Sony subsidiary will be prioritizing its extraction shooter Marathon for the foreseeable future, with some Destiny 2 developers already having been moved to the new project.
A “significant” number of layoffs are planned, it’s claimed, which will be the latest to hit the studio following its $3.6 billion sale to Sony Interactive Entertainment back in 2022. The report further states, “The company doesn’t have a new project lined up for Destiny 2’s development team after the game comes to an end next month,” and it “doesn’t plan to immediately enter production on a Destiny 3.”

Layoffs At Bungie Raise Questions About Future of the Series
Sources say Bungie’s staff are getting ready to pitch new projects, including fresh ideas set in the Destiny universe, but so far, nothing has been confirmed for now. Bungie has confirmed on its website that the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 is set for June 9, following a noticeable dip in player numbers and a recent expansion that failed to impress fans.
According to Bungie, the final update will serve as a collection of “love letters to players”, bringing back fan-favorite modes and adding small story moments to give the game’s characters a memorable send-off. “Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to”.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently reported a $765 million impairment loss on Bungie assets after the launch of Marathon. So far, Sony hasn’t shared how the game has performed since its release earlier this year.
