The new Call of Duty will finally break free from the previous generation by skipping its release on last-gen consoles going forward, officially ending the series’ ten-year run on PS4 and Xbox One. Earlier this week, rumors suggested the upcoming title, possibly Modern Warfare 4, was being tested on PlayStation 4, sending tremors of doubt across the grapevine. With the PS4 nearing its 13th year and talk of a PlayStation 6 already taking place, many believe it’s long past time for the franchise to finally move forward.
The official Call of Duty X account has confirmed that the new upcoming Call of Duty is not in development for PS4, which presumably means it’s not in development for Xbox One either. This will be the first Call of Duty game since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts to not release on the Xbox One/PS4 generation.

New Call of Duty On PS4 Being Dropped Could Boost Creativity
This shift could benefit the series, as developers are no longer limited by the constraints of older hardware. The need to accommodate last-gen consoles may have stifled creativity, which could explain why Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, in the US, saw the lowest ranking for the series in nearly twenty years.
Last month, Xbox revealed it would hold back new Call of Duty releases from launching on Game Pass on day one. Taken together, these moves could be a smart play for both Xbox and the Call of Duty franchise. Making the latest game exclusive to newer consoles could possibly break the franchise’s monotony and be a much-needed breath of fresh air.
The Call of Duty series has gotten stale as of late, resulting in more and more players just sticking to past releases rather than jumping to the latest ones. Perhaps this will allow the new Call of Duty on the horizon to have a better chance of capturing the interest of its fanbase, like many of the older titles used to.
