Replaced, released on April 14 by Sad Cat Studios and Thunderful, has been praised for its extremely distinctive visuals and engaging story. Set in a dark, cyberpunk version of the 1980s, the game features a human-AI hybrid protagonist. However, a miscommunication led some social media users to believe the game itself was created using AI, despite the fact that Replaced is not AI-made. A recent review described Replaced as an “AI-based adventure that could do with a system update,” which negatively affected some users’ perceptions.
This review eventually led Sad Cat Studios to address this issue. They stated, “As we have seen, some people misunderstand what IGN means by AI-based. We just want to clarify: This game was 100% handcrafted. No generative AI was used to make this. What IGN is referring to is the story about AI in an alternative 80s America.”
The controversy following the review is not new and is, in fact, part of a broader debate. The use of artificial intelligence in gaming has been a contentious topic for years, with projects that use generative AI to create games often facing criticism or complete boycotts from players.

Replaced Is Not AI-Made And Continues To Impress With Story And Style.
Despite the initial confusion, Replaced has performed well since launch. The story follows Dr. Warren Marsh, a scientist on the run after a sentient AI named REACH is implanted in his skull. Players control the AI, guiding Marsh with the goal of returning to the laboratory to separate from the human host. This premise drives an engaging 11-hour journey through an alternate 1980s America, depicted in detailed pixel art.
Now that the company has addressed that Replaced is not AI-made, concerns regarding the same are expected to subside. The game has proven quite successful, with Sad Cat Studios calling it a “strong debut success” and making it a significant milestone in the studio’s growth. Notably, the game is available exclusively on Windows and Xbox platforms.
