Sony has “Hell to pay” after blindsiding gamers with their Helldivers 2 PSN account announcement. In an official statement, the PlayStation makers claimed that making linking requirements for Helldivers 2 Steam accounts to a PlayStation account optional was a “technical issue.” Now that the “grace period” is over, everyone has to have a PSN account linked to the popular co-op shooter.
Originally, the game made this PSN requirement optional upon its launch, but it seems like the Sony executives saw the rapid success and popularity of the addictive third-person shooter, and quickly changed their minds, making it mandatory for gamers to have a Helldivers 2 PSN account.
Here’s What Sony Had to Say About Helldivers 2 PSN Account Announcement
Sony has confirmed that starting May 30, the requirement will be reinstated, and all players will need to have their Steam and PSN accounts linked by June 4, as stated on the game’s Steam page.
Sony explained, “Due to technical issues at the launch of Helldivers 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional. That grace period will now expire.”
The company emphasized the importance of account linking in maintaining player safety and security, stating that it enables effective moderation against abusive behavior, as well as providing banned players with the opportunity to appeal.
What Does This Mean for Helldivers 2 Steam Players?
As of May 6, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam are required to connect their Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account. Existing players will begin seeing the mandatory login requirement from May 30 and must complete the linking process by June 4.
Helldivers 2’s upcoming premium DLC, titled Polar Patriots, is scheduled for release on May 9. This expansion will introduce new weapons, armor, emotes, and capes for players to enjoy.
Despite its relatively short availability period, Helldivers 2 has already secured an impressive position in the US games industry sales ranking, according to research firm Circana, further solidifying its status as a noteworthy addition to Sony’s published games.
