Studio Respawn Entertainment had to issue a public apology after messing up everyone’s Apex Legends progress by taking their popular battle royale game offline temporarily to address the issues stemming from a recent update.
Players were in for a rude awakening, with some worried about another Apex Legends hack, as Respawn faced backlash over account resets and lost progress. The outcry prompted Respawn to take the game offline.
Players Furious Over Lost Apex Legends Progress
In an official statement released on Tuesday at 10:35 am PT / 6:35 pm BST, Respawn acknowledged the reports of account resets and assured players that they were actively investigating the matter. Hours later, an update was rolled out to prevent further loss of Apex Legends progress or content for players logging in after the fix.
However, for those already affected by the reset, Respawn urged patience as they worked on an additional solution to restore their accounts to their pre-update state. The studio provided further updates on Wednesday at 2:00 am PT / 10:00 am BST, expressing gratitude for players’ patience and announcing the deployment of a fix to bring the servers back online.
In a tweet, Respawn admitted to the error, stating:

They assured players of a swift resolution to restore progress and content to affected accounts. By 5:15 am PT / 1:15 pm BST, Respawn confirmed the release of a fix and the restoration of game servers. However, due to the rollback, progress made throughout the previous day would need to be restored, and the new Ranked Split rollout would be postponed to a later date.
These setbacks arrive amidst challenging times for Respawn and Apex Legends. The studio recently faced layoffs as part of broader restructuring efforts at parent company Electronic Arts. That, coupled with the recent hack during the Apex Legends finals shows that EA is going through a bit of a tumultuous period.
Despite the setbacks, Respawn remains committed to addressing player concerns and delivering a smooth gaming experience for Apex Legends players that could rival the likes of Fortnite or Valorant.
